More about

Darrow School

Darrow School, founded in 1932 on the site of the original Shaker community, is a co-ed boarding and day school for grades 9-12 offering a comprehensive, hands-on, college-preparatory curriculum in a supportive environment. A low student-to-teacher ratio allows for a high level of individual attention, and an average class size of nine students affords all students the opportunity to actively participate in the learning process. Historic buildings include the Tannery, where school meetings and other events take place, and the retrofitted Meeting House, built in 1824, which is home to our library. Modern buildings include the 12,000-square-foot Joline Arts Center, which houses studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, and woodworking, a photography lab, a multimedia graphics lab, and gallery space. The Samson Environmental Center, powered with renewable energy, and Living Machine natural wastewater treatment facility are our sustainability showpieces. Hands-to-Work is our unique service program by which students work together to maintain our campus, lead sustainability efforts, gain practical skills, and serve the community each week. Our extensive Sustainability Initiatives are incorporated into academic work, campus grounds and facilities, and daily life activities. Spring Term is our weeklong experiential learning program, at the end of spring exams, for which the world is our classroom.
